Introduction
DWG Support adds direct .dwg drawing upload to CupixWorks. DWG files are managed in a dedicated DWG Files tab in Project Setup, configured in the DWG Editor, and reviewed as overlays in SiteView’s BIM Compare view alongside Building Information Modeling (BIM) files.
Coordinate and scale information embedded in the DWG file is read automatically. This removes the manual Scale and Origin configuration that the PDF-based Reference Plan workflow requires, and eliminates positional errors that manual configuration introduces on large sites.
Note: DWG Support targets civil engineering sites and is planned to release alongside SkyMap. Reference Plans continue to manage PDF and image drawings. The DWG module operates independently, and all existing Reference Plan upload paths are retained.

Background
Before DWG Support, drawings reached CupixWorks only as PDF or image Reference Plans. This created four problems for teams that manage drawings in DWG format:
- Coordinate and scale information embedded in the DWG file is lost during PDF or image conversion. Users re-enter Scale and Origin manually for every drawing, and small input errors are amplified into significant positional deviations at real-world scale.
- A single DWG file contains multiple drawings, but layers are organized by element type (columns, walls, finishes) rather than by drawing. Selecting the right drawing happens outside CupixWorks and often requires extra confirmation between team members.
- Reference Plans have no revision management. When a design drawing is updated, the entire upload and alignment process starts from scratch with no version history.
- SiteView’s BIM Compare view surfaces only BIM files. DWG content cannot be reviewed against capture data in the same comparison context.
DWG Support addresses each of these: direct upload preserves the embedded metadata, Crop Area handles drawing selection, Reupload provides version history, and the BIM Compare view gains a DWG tab.
DWG Files Tab
The DWG Files tab in Project Setup lists every DWG file registered to the project. Select a row to open the Info Panel on the right, which shows that file’s details, status, and actions.
Table columns:
- DWG – thumbnail and file name.
- Updated – most recent change.
- Conversion – server-side conversion status: In Progress or Done.
- Level – assigned project level(s).
- Scale / Origin – configuration status checks.
- Publish – whether the file is published to SiteView.
The Scale, Origin, and Publish columns show a check mark only after the DWG is configured in the DWG Editor. Until the file is set up, these columns stay empty.
The Info Panel shows the file name, Scale and Origin status, the Publish to SiteView toggle, ID, Creator, Created and Recent Update dates, Source (Web Upload or Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC)), Source File, and the Open and Reupload buttons.
Note: A DWG file cannot be published to SiteView until at least one Level is assigned. The Info Panel shows the message “You must set a level before publishing to SiteView” until then.
Upload a DWG File
Upload registers the file and starts server-side conversion.
- Navigate to Project Setup → DWG Files.
- Click Upload DWG File, then drag and drop a .dwg file or choose one with the file selector.
- The file appears in the list with Conversion: In Progress. The Open action is blocked during this state.
When the Conversion column shows Done, the file is ready to configure in the DWG Editor and becomes eligible for SiteView publishing.
Note: Only the .dwg file format is supported.
DWG Editor
The DWG Editor is a standalone full-screen editor for configuring an individual DWG file. Click Open in the Info Panel to launch it. The editor has its own header with a project and file breadcrumb and a Save button.
The editor has three panes:
- Left – the layer panel, listing every layer with a Publish toggle and a Show on Load star per layer. Bulk Publish all layers and Unpublish all layers buttons sit at the top. An eye icon on each row controls editor-only visibility and does not affect SiteView.
- Center – the 2D drawing canvas with a bottom toolbar, a unit selector (m / mm / ft) at the top left, and the Crop Area toggle at the top right. The unit selector changes display only; the underlying DWG metadata is preserved.
- Right – Configure and Info tabs. The Configure tab contains Level Assignment, Set Origin, and Set Scale.
Crop Area
A single DWG file often contains multiple drawings. Crop Area limits the active drawing to a selected region.
- Toggle Crop Area at the top right of the canvas. A rectangular frame with corner handles appears.
- Drag the corner handles to frame the drawing area you need.
- Click Save to apply the crop, or Reset to restore the full view.
After saving, only the framed area is treated as the active drawing for Level association and SiteView overlay. A “Saved” toast confirms the write.
Note: The initial Crop Area frame covers the full extent of every object in the DWG file. If a small object sits far away from the main drawing, the initial frame can be much larger than the drawing itself — drag the corner handles to narrow it to the area you need.
Level Assignment
In the Configure tab, the Level Assignment dropdown is multi-select: one DWG file can be assigned to several project levels at once without duplicate uploads. Options include every project level plus Select All and Default.
In SiteView, the active level drives the DWG list — only DWG files assigned to that level appear in the BIM Compare modal’s DWG tab.
Set Origin and Scale
Both values are pre-filled automatically from the DWG file’s embedded metadata once conversion is done. Manual override is available:
- Set Origin – click Pick Point to choose a reference point on the canvas, then enter offsets for X (East), Y (North), and Z (Elevation).
- Set Scale – click Edit to open the scale modal and enter a 1:N ratio (default 1:1).
Configuration status surfaces back in the DWG Files list as the Scale and Origin column checks.
Layer Publish and Show on Load
Each layer carries two independent toggles that govern SiteView behavior:
- Publish – whether the layer is exposed to SiteView at all. Layers with Publish off never reach SiteView.
- Show on Load (star) – whether the layer is visible by default when a SiteView user opens the DWG. This has effect only when Publish is on.
Note: The layer panel lists every layer in the DWG file. Layers assigned to blocks themselves are not listed. The eye icon in the layer panel is editor-only visibility — it helps you de-clutter the canvas while editing and has no effect on SiteView.
Save and Publish to SiteView
Saving is manual. Click Save in the editor header; a “Saved” toast confirms the write. Then return to the DWG Files list and turn on Publish to SiteView in the Info Panel. The toggle requires at least one assigned Level.
Reupload and Version History
When a design drawing is revised, upload the new revision instead of starting over.
- Select the file in the DWG Files list and click Reupload in the Info Panel.
- Choose the new .dwg file.
The new version becomes Active automatically and SiteView overlays reflect it. Previous versions are preserved in the version history. Existing alignment and layer configuration are inherited by the new version when possible and can be adjusted as needed.
DWG in SiteView
Published DWG files are viewed in SiteView through the BIM viewer — the same viewer used for BIM files. Open the BIM viewer and select a published DWG file to overlay it on the current view.
To open the drawing list, select BIM Compare from the left nav, then click Change to switch between the BIM and DWG drawing lists. Select a DWG file from the DWG list to overlay it on the current view.
The view setting controls how the overlay is presented. Switch between Single, Dual, and TwinLens to overlay the DWG on the 360° capture. TwinLens renders the DWG inside the TwinLens window.
DWG in SkyMap mode
DWG overlays are also available in SkyMap mode. Enter SkyMap mode and open the BIM viewer the same way, then select a DWG file to overlay it on the 2D orthomosaic for an aerial view. The same Single, Dual, and TwinLens view settings apply.
Overlay behavior applies in both views:
- Level-driven listing – only DWG files whose Level Assignment includes the active SiteView level are listed.
- Multi-DWG selection – multiple DWG files can be selected and rendered together.
- Per-layer visibility – the layer panel lists the published layers. Default visibility follows each layer’s Show on Load state, and viewers can toggle layers during the session without changing the source DWG configuration.
- BIM and DWG are mutually exclusive – selecting one deactivates the other, so you review either BIM or DWG at a time.
