Taking Onsite Measurements
To take measurements using the final digital twins displayed in SiteView, you will need to scale the reference plan(s). With the correct scaling, measurement error can be minimized to plus or minus 1% error.
Scaling the reference plan(s) requires the use of real-life measurements taken from the jobsite.
If taking accurate measurements from the digital twins is important for your team, we highly recommend making this step part of your capture workflow.
Dimensions to Measure
The following guidelines outline how best to pick an onsite dimension to use as a reference measurement:
- Pick the longest dimension - If possible, measure the longest dimension on the inside of the building on your reference plan. This could be a long corridor, or the length of a wall of the building.
Any error to the measurement made of a long dimension will be divided up along the length of that measurement, minimizing it for smaller dimensions.
If a small dimension is used, any error introduced in that measurement will be multiplied along the length of a larger dimension.
- Make multiple measurements - We recommend making several measurements, especially measurements that are along different axis, to ensure accuracy in your final scaled digital twins.
Laser Measuring Tools
Due to their high accuracy, small size, and efficiency of use, we strongly recommend using a laser measuring tool.
To ensure accuracy in laser measurements taken onsite, keep the following best practices in mind:
- When using laser measuring tools, aim at solid, non-reflective surfaces.
- Make measurements in areas that are free of debris or particles in the air - avoid measuring dusty, rainy, or smokey facilities. Particles in the air can interfere with the accuracy of the resulting value.
